Pregnancy confirmation letter

Written confirmation of your pregnancy and estimated due date, signed by a UK GP — for airlines, employers, insurers and official applications.

The short answer. A pregnancy confirmation letter states that you are pregnant and gives your estimated due date, signed by a doctor. It is proof of pregnancy — not a fitness-to-travel document. If your airline has asked for a fit to fly letter because you are past week 28, you need the fit to fly version instead.

What people use it for

  • Airlines and travel — some carriers ask for written confirmation of your due date before week 28, particularly where a booking is being changed or a fare rule requires evidence.
  • Employers — formal notification of pregnancy, risk assessments and maternity leave arrangements.
  • Travel and health insurers — confirming pregnancy and dates when arranging or amending cover.
  • Applications and exemptions — where written proof of pregnancy is required.

What the letter contains

Your name and date of birth, confirmation of the pregnancy, your estimated date of delivery, whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy where known, and the doctor’s name, GMC number, signature and date, on headed paper.

Common questions

What is a pregnancy confirmation letter?

A short signed letter confirming that you are pregnant and giving your estimated due date. It is used as proof of pregnancy for airlines, employers, insurers, landlords and some benefit or exemption applications.

Is it the same as a fit to fly letter?

No, and airlines will usually not accept one instead. A confirmation letter states that you are pregnant and when you are due. A fit to fly letter goes further and confirms there are no complications and that you are safe to fly. If you are past week 28 and travelling, you need the fit to fly version.

Can I use my MATB1 instead?

Sometimes. The MATB1 is issued by your midwife or GP from around week 20 and is designed for maternity pay, so it proves pregnancy and due date but says nothing about fitness to travel. Employers and some insurers accept it; airlines asking for a fit to fly letter will not.

How early can I get one?

As soon as the pregnancy is confirmed. Many people want one well before the 12-week scan — for a work notification, an insurance policy or a booking change — and there is no reason to wait.
